Environmentally friendly solutions & Byron Corner Store

Since 1983, Byron Corner Store has been a staple of Australia’s famous Bay.

Heralded by various owners, in 2016 it found a new lease of life under the guidance of brothers Lachie and Reif Hand, who inherited the business from their parents and have created a ‘quick eats’ establishment of great acclaim.

Locals flock there for the takeaway coffee – ”the best in town,” says Lachie – sandwiches, burgers, and smoothies, but with increased footfall comes increased risk of single-use plastics going to landfill.

How do the Hand brothers keep Byron Corner Store environmentally friendly?

With their 70sqm tenancy, Byron Corner Store has no kitchen or dishwasher, meaning all of their packaging is takeaway. From the start they have used 100% fully biodegradable and recyclable packaging for coffee cups, smoothie/shake cups, and food containers. They actively encourage customers to bring their own reusable cups to the premises, and offer a 30c discount on coffee as an incentive.

But the real changemaker? Last year Byron Corner Store implemented Method bins as a stylish yet practical solution for their recycling and waste. All food packaging is able to be placed in their Organics bin – this ensures an effective diversion and reduced risk of contamination.

We wanted it to be as easy as possible for our customers to do the right thing

“Most companies offers only closed lid bins. We wanted it to be as easy as possible for our customers to do the right thing, without having to the touch the bin or use a foot level,” says co-owner Reif Hand.

The HD Connector has worked to efficiently keep Byron Corner Store’s Method Recycling Station in place, while Method’s 60L Bin Liners become invisible with the bin’s Patented Bag Retainer.

Byron Corner Store continue to work towards closing the loop with their waste, with help from Method.
